Resilience in industrial SMEs

Resilience Resilience in industrial SMEs with PLM

Transparency as a strategic success factor

The resilience of industrial companies depends crucially on transparency, digitalization and integrated control. Consistent information flows, digital early warning systems and standardized interfaces support efficient planning, early risk detection and rapid response to changes. PLM solutions bundle data, processes and organization across the entire product life cycle and thus create a resilient basis for quality and competitiveness.

Efficient organization through networked data and processes

Industrial companies are faced with the task of making their organizations resilient, adaptable and efficient at the same time. A recent online survey conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation IPA as part of the RESIPLAT research project clearly shows which factors are the focus of company management: transparent information flows, digital processes and forward-looking control mechanisms.

At the Survey The majority of participants were managers from medium-sized and large companies in mechanical and plant engineering, the metal industry, the automotive industry and their suppliers. The results thus provide a reliable picture of industries with high complexity, long product life cycles and highly networked value chains.

Information flows as the foundation of resilient organizations

A key result of the Study is the importance of information and management issues. Information and transparency aspects are seen as decisive factors for stable corporate management. Particularly where information is consistently available across departments, there are clear advantages in planning, coordination and decision-making.

A shared database plays a key role in the collaboration between development, production, purchasing and sales. Consistent information flows support better coordination of requirements, capacities and market needs and thus create the basis for efficient and reliable processes.

Early warning systems and dashboards as management tools

The survey results also show that digital early warning systems and dashboards are highly relevant. These are seen as effective tools for making risks visible at an early stage, presenting deviations transparently and supporting fact-based decisions.

The focus here is on integrated solutions that bring together information from different areas. Real-time data on supply chains, production capacities, costs and resources enable forward-looking management and increase responsiveness in dynamic market environments.

Digitalization as a connecting element along the product life cycle

In the Fraunhofer RESIPLAT survey, digitalization is clearly seen as a unifying element. Standardized interfaces for data exchange and AI-supported planning approaches that transparently map complex relationships and support decision-making processes are particularly in demand.

Digitization as a connecting element between departments

Digital consistency ensures that information is used consistently, media disruptions are avoided and knowledge is secured for the long term. This creates a stable basis for quality, efficiency and scalability - in product development as well as in production and the supply chain.

PLM as a structuring approach for transparency and consistency

In practice, it has been shown that these requirements are implemented particularly effectively when product data, processes and organization are brought together in a consistent PLM approach. PLM solutions create a central, structured database across the entire product life cycle and enable transparent information flows between all areas involved.

Thanks to clearly defined data models, integrated processes and standardized interfaces, PLM systems support consistent collaboration between development, production, purchasing and sales. Early warning mechanisms, evaluations and dashboards can thus be based directly on a reliable database.

Conclusion: Transparent data strengthens resilience and competitiveness
